Mathematics in Further Education Colleges (MiFEC) Summer Update 2018

The Mathematics in Further Education Colleges (MiFEC) summer update provides a brief update on progress with the project since September 2017 and presents a few of the emerging findings. Early findings from the project offer some insight into how policy is being enacted and shaping practice in four strands: 1) A national policy trajectory analysis and literature review; 2) Analyses of student progression over time; 3) Case studies of Further Education colleges; and, 4) A survey of the mathematics teacher workforce.

Academic Research: Open-access research journal portals, Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a freely accessible web search engine.  It allows users to search for digital or physical copies of articles, whether online or in libraries.  Some of the links are to commercial journal articles and so only an abstract and citation may be freely available.  

The site includes helpful tips on searches, email alerts and more.

Academic Research: Open-access research journal portals, DOAJ – the Directory of Open Access Journals

DOAJ is a community-curated online directory that indexes and provides access to high quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals. DOAJ is independent. All funding is via donations, 50% of which comes from sponsors and 50% from members and publisher members. All DOAJ services are free of charge including being indexed in DOAJ. All data is freely available

Academic Research: Data Sets, UK Data Service

The UK Data Service is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to meet the data needs of researchers, students and teachers from all sectors, including academia, central and local government, charities and foundations, independent research centres, think tanks, and business consultants and the commercial sector.
Data users can browse the UK Data Service collections online and register to analyse and download them. The Open Data collections are available for anyone to use.

The Education and Training Foundation (ETF) is tasked with leading on workforce data collection across the FE sector and publishing summary reports.
Understanding trends and patterns within the FE sector workforce is important for providers, for policy makers and for sector bodies. Common themes, such as average salary, average age, gender balance and percentage of qualified staff, help to inform decision making and strategic activity.
