This review, published one year on from the CAVTL report:
A. reflects on progress in raising the status and quality of vocational education and training;
B. recognises the significant contribution of the new Education and Training Foundation to the early implementation of the CAVTL recommendations;
C. signposts four key developments that would further develop and strengthen the outcomes and impact of a first-class VET system.

A step by step guide for providers
This guide is aimed at providers who are considering offering GCSEs in English and
maths. It will also be useful for all providers who would like to adopt a more
coherent approach to delivering English and maths within Apprenticeships in general.
Although the guide mainly focuses on GCSEs, we are aware that functional skills or other English and maths qualifications may be more appropriate for many apprentices.

It looks specifically at skills they will need to participate actively in meetings with their mentor. It also develops skills for giving informal presentations and writing reflective accounts of learning activities and incidents that happen during their placement. This module focuses on the communication skills that nurses need to handle more complex situations on the ward. It looks at skills for dealing with angry and upset patients and relatives and handling a range of telephone calls from relatives and other medical staff. It also looks at the skills a nurse needs to make an effective contribution at ward meetings.
