An OTLA project by DevelopEBP that aimed to encourage learners to take a more active role in their learning, specifically through developing an understanding of what is being assessed and how.
This project explored supporting learners to take a more active role in the process of assessment by replacing the grading system with specific, targeted feedback.
To overcome learners' sense of failure as a barrier to achievement, English GCSE resit tutors encouraged students to analyse questions and their responses without grading them. The initial assessment, based on AQA Paper 1, allowed learners to select a specific skill to focus on and develop without scoring, but supported by improved self-reflection. The project reported that the final assessment had seen a significant improvement in achievement.
