A case study of a project designed to build collaboration between the college and employers, to enhance employer-led curriculum innovation and to update college staff's skills and knowledge of current work practices.
KM Training Ltd worked in partnership with six local employers to deliver a series of employer-led masterclasses to upskill teaching staff on current hair and beauty practice and broaden the range of online materials for staff and learner development. Each employer showcased their different skills and expertise in a range of trends, including barbering and colouring techniques. Skills developed by employers were mapped to both the apprenticeship standards and the Education and Training Foundation’s (ETF) Professional Standards for Further Education teachers.
Gateshead College worked in collaboration with Enigma Interactive, DevAcademy, Nutshell Apps and Hedgehog Labs, and four local SMEs in the digital technology sector, to support learners and re-align its curriculum to the latest industry techniques. Teaching staff were given the tools to update their industry knowledge and enhance learner induction through employer-led networking events. This ensured that learners were exposed to a variety of industry practice and business needs, and at the same time, employers gained coaching and mentoring skills.

Teach Too is about encouraging people from different industries to spend time teaching their work and contributing to curriculum development, promoting the practice of teachers and trainers updating their industry experience and helping to build genuine collaborative arrangements between employers and providers. Phase 3 of Teach Too built on the principles identified through earlier work and aimed to embed sustainable Teach Too practice across 12 small scale development projects. The final report provides some highlights from the work and examples of effective practice.
