Stepping Up in Sustainability: Easton & Otley College - Employability and Sustainability

The focus of this project was the link between sustainability and employability, and an aim of the project was to create a definition for sustainability in linking to employability. Using pedagogy that provided incentives through competition and reflections through group tutorials, and use of video case study, the project also sought to develop long-term relationships and close working with employers.

This case study describes North Warwickshire and Hinckley College’s approach to developing an interactive online toolkit for promoting and embedding effective practice in sustainability. The aim was to create and develop a highly engaging and interactive online rapid e-learning training tool, for promoting and embedding effective practice in Sustainability, with the added intention of providing in-house accreditation for Governors, staff and students alike.

Stepping Up in Sustainability: New College Stamford - Discovering Sustainability

The project was focused on developing new teaching and learning techniques with ‘sustainability’ as the key theme to encourage learners to think about their subjects and their responsibilities as ‘global citizens’. The project involved teaching staff undertaking a series of supported small scale action research projects to develop this in the classroom, while the College pulled together the resources to share and disseminate amongst all staff.

Stepping Up in Sustainability: Hounslow Adult and Community Education - Sustainability Champions

A key aim of this project was to embed sustainability into learning programmes, using Sustainability Champions, and ensure teaching and learning processes were enhanced through activities that have a positive impact on local communities with respect to the environment, healthy lifestyles and volunteering. The project also focused on supporting local economic strategies and links with the local authority, and on developing and implementing sustainability awareness training modules and assessments for all staff.

Stepping Up in Sustainability: Gateway College - Entrepreneurs of the Future

The starting point for this project was the Government’s report ‘Enabling the Transition to a Green Economy: Government and business working together’ (2011) in which a transition to a green economy is deemed essential in order to secure a prosperous economy for the future and the role of the FE and skills sector in this. At the same time, from research within the Colleges & University of Leicester Network's (CULN) Sustainable Development Working Group, it was apparent that more needs to be done to help embed sustainability within curriculum.

Stepping Up in Sustainability: Colchester Institute - Creating a Sustainable Vision and Strategy at Colchester Institute

Through this project, Colchester Institute sought to cultivate a sustainable one-planet vision throughout the organisation by embedding a sustainable ethos within the management team which can be assimilated to all staff, learners and partners. This included the formation of a sustainability group, development of a strategy and identification of sustainability champions to implement and monitor progress.

Stepping Up in Sustainability: Blackpool and the Fylde College - Student Entitlement to Education for Sustainable Development

The project was designed to enable a better understanding of sustainable development (SD) amongst tutors, and allow them to experiment with SD within different areas of the curriculum. The project aimed to: develop a strategy to embed SD into all curriculum areas; create piloted and evaluated SD activities and lesson plans in four curriculum areas; educate staff on the subject of SD; work with a wide variety of staff to develop SD pedagogies; and create an online ESD resource bank for FE and HE tutors offering lesson plans and resources that can be adapted to suit each curriculum area.

Staffing – embedding sustainable development in induction and appraisal
Students – embedding sustainable development in induction, enrichment & tutorial
Curriculum development – development of a sustainable development education curriculum framework

Regional Sustainability Collaboration project: Yorkshire & The Humber - The world of Hair and Beauty

This project aimed to produce high-quality transferable teaching materials developed collaboratively by range of providers, based on the concept of a circular economy and the world of Hair & Beauty. The project sought to increase regional engagement through a cohort of students and their staff who would examine and audit their existing curriculum for evidence of sustainability and inform the embedding of sustainability into more areas of the curriculum.
