A project illustrating how an FE College, working collaboratively with a trade union, can promote the development of green jobs and skills
The primary aim of this project was to collaboratively identify and implement effective cultural change agents, projects and processes which would deliver a 5-10% reduction in its energy use and move the college towards its longer term target of a 25% reduction in its carbon emissions by 2016.
This project aimed to achieve a greener future by getting learners and staff fully involved and committed to carbon reduction, through a Switch Off and Recycling campaign using student champions to change behaviour.
The main aims of the project were to: develop and deliver a 'training the trainers/mentors' learning package on carbon free and environmental sustainability; develop and deliver a new unit on carbon free and environmental sustainability to sit alongside existing employability training modules; develop information and guidance on training and career and progression routes in carbon free and environmental sustainability industries; and support a cohort of participants to attend training on ‘'Understanding Sustainable Refurbishment'.
The aim of this project was to work with 20 trainee teachers to design and test a programme of activities and lessons that embed sustainability into the formal curriculum. The project formed part of their assessed work on the DTLLS course and provided learners, with an opportunity to gain a valuable insight into embedding sustainability into the curriculum. The project also sought to raise awareness amongst the target group of the importance of sustainability to their future employability and introduce participants to the concept of sustainability and how to apply it.
The aims of this project were to: encourage learners, staff and stakeholders to innovate and implement sustainable development principles as part of ‘bottom up’ development; reduce the College’s energy usage via energy saving technology and behaviour changes; use energy monitoring to support the outcomes of teaching and learning; engage learners and the local community in sustainable development.
The overarching aim for the project was to seed a culture in which the aspiration to conspicuous consumption is replaced with the aspiration to preserve the existing planet resource asset base. It was proposed to set up, facilitate, support and promote three Learning Circles in partnership with two Local Registered Social Landlords (RSLs), to target local disadvantaged families.
The aim of this project was to embed a sustainable development ethos within learning delivery and the learner experience, throughout all stages of learner engagement, delivery and evaluation. The project team sought to develop and implement a strategy for this through empowering staff, learners and stakeholders to provide their own vision on what sustainable development means to them. To maximise impact, the team evaluated and disseminated best practice to key partners within the sector, and sought to ensure it became part of the ongoing learning strategy.
The starting point for this project was the premise that learning providers need to develop innovative forms of learning infrastructure that make best use of the new generation of learning systems and focus on the delivery of those higher order 21st Century skills that will help society become “low carbon ready”.
This project looked to develop two change-agents for each of four academic areas (hair and beauty, engineering, essential skills and motor vehicle). One agent would be chosen from the academic team, the other, such as technicians or Operations Leaders, from the support team. The project created a VLE area from which material relating to sustainability could be downloaded.
