A project illustrating how an FE College, working collaboratively with a trade union, can promote the development of green jobs and skills
The focus of the project was to identify effective practices for promoting sustainable environmental jobs and skills. To this end, the authors identified a number of specific aims: to liaise with local employers who would be influential in promoting low carbon training; to liaise with local community organisations working on sustainable development; to create opportunites for students to experience work with local organisations that would be involved in delivering green work; to produce training materials that could be used on a range of Education for Sustainable Development courses and meetings; to develop the networking capacity of a community low carbon zone, and; to offer a practical demonstration of community trade unionism
The project achieved a number of successes: multiple participating students took part in work with local employers on green projects; public meetings to inform the local community about the project gathered around 100 people in attendance; the local Low Carbon Zone was strengthened via local meetings and community fundraising, and; materials and training were produced/provided for local stakeholders. Data was gathered from participants/observers, and custom test/assessments.
