A case study exploring the understanding of self-regulated learning among learners, and their input into a SRLS toolkit to enhance its efficacy.
The project aimed to collect learners' thoughts on independent learning through semi-structured interviews before placing them into groups to discuss the topic. They were asked to design a toolkit with learners of all abilities in mind, with revision for summer exams as the main focus. Learners were allowed to develop their ideas without external intervention to prevent any contamination from the researcher. The toolkit developed was then shared with learners attending revision classes and their feedback was collected and analysed
Learners involved in the research wanted to engage in effective learning and understood in principle that this would include independent learning, but they often lacked clarity about specifically what was expected by teachers which inevitably inhibited independent learning. The structured approach to the production of the toolkit for all students encouraged learners to develop their own independent learning through time management, organisation, and self-awareness, and built ownership of independent learning. Learners who used the resulting toolkit also gave positive feedback about the finished product.
