Dyslexia resource guide

This reference guide aims to provide teachers and trainers in the FE sector with an understanding of the potential impact of dyslexia on learning and how to better support learners to achieve their full potential. It focuses on dyslexia and related conditions from a neurodiversity perspective, including how staff can make the most of an individual’s strengths and positive characteristics that may be associated with their neurodiverse condition.

Toolkit: Using competition activity in the vocational curriculum with learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Competition activity is a great way to raise aspirations, improve learners’ skills and employment prospects, strengthen learning programmes and introduce an element of excitement into the vocational curriculum.  While competition activity is relatively well-established as a feature of the curriculum at higher levels, it is less commonly used with learners at Entry level and Level 1.  However, providers who have been exploring the use of competition with learners with SEND report that it is just as beneficial for their learners – and easy to implement.

SEND CPD Framework

This document presents the collation of a mapping exercise of SEND CPD training and qualifications support available from the Education and Training Foundation and, a wide range of other organisations. The inclusion of information from other organisations does not indicate a recommendation by the Education and Training Foundation of this offer. The information is provided to raise awareness to the SEND workforce of the variety CPD opportunities available.
The information is presented in themes with a colour coding that indicates the target audience for the training.

Engaging Learners with Assistive Technology to improve outcomes

As part of the Improving Study Programmes for Learners with SEND, four colleges: Beaumont, Activate, Henshaw's and Langdon ran a progroject that focused on assistive technology. This zipped file contents the resource outputs from that project. Included is an introduction to their project, four case studies (one from each college), a map outlining the assistive technology assessment process and an IT access assessment proforma.

Current Practice in Using a System of Phonics with Post-16 Learners

The ETF commissioned this research to review the extent to which phonics approaches are currently used with Entry level learners across the sector and to identify how adult literacy tutors might be supported to use phonics approaches effectively. In turn, the research has reviewed the existing evidence base on the efficacy of using phonics approaches with adult learners, and explored the context in which adult literacy teaching at Entry levels takes place.

Reimagining assessment and tracking in maths and English: a review of the wider literature supporting the need for change

This review was produced by the CETTAcademy team as part of an Education and Training Foundation project to review the current literature regarding the practices of initial and diagnostic assessment, as well as progress tracking, in the context of maths and English across the Education and Training sector.

Improving Level 2 English and maths outcomes for 16 to 18 year olds Literature review

The EEF have commissioned this review to assess the evidence on specific interventions, or key
features of interventions, which may be effective in improving English and mathematics outcomes for these
students. Particularly in light of the new policy requirements, the EEF is interested in interventions that aim to
help students succeed at GCSE, and also provisions that aim to improve mathematics and English attainment
more generally, for example through improved functional skills outcomes.
