Topic 2 entitled 'My local area' contains four units: (i) My neighbourhood, (ii) Local services, (iii) Recycling and (iv) Out and about. Each unit contains a series of learning activities and resources to support practitioners to deliver the topic to new to ESOL learners.
The record sheet is designed to be used with the screening questions and guidance.
The screening interview questions include descriptions of the type of language and literacy expected at each level, and examples of typical responses. Responses to the questions can be recorded on the accompanying record sheet.
The report summarises the research stage of the 'Learners New to ESOL' project. It includes a review of existing research and policy as well as discussion of original practitioner research on the provision of 'pre-Entry' and Entry Level 1 ESOL. The report details how the materials were developed in response to the views of practitioners and makes recommendations for policy and practice.
The screening package is a set of resources designed to help identify learners who may be new to ESOL as opposed to those who might join an Entry 1 ESOL class. This screening pack has been developed primarily for non-ESOL specialists. The guidance provides an overview of how to use the screening tool and some general information about the characteristics of learners who are new to ESOL.
The learner profiles are descriptions of real ESOL learners who are new to ESOL and Entry Level 1. The profiles contain samples of their writing, information about their background and details about their engagement in ESOL.
This section contains the pictures used in the teaching materials collated in a PDF. These materials are reproduced here so they can be used independently of the teaching and learning materials.
This section contains reading texts and a picture book for use in teaching, as well as templates for some of the most used activities or lexical items for this level. They are designed to be easily adaptable and are often referenced in the teaching materials themselves.

A toolkit for, and case study exploring, a project that placed teacher staff in industry work placements to accrue experience, then cascaded their experiences to colleagues, and ultimately endeavoured to improved students' learning experiences.
