Principal focus of the project:

The purpose of this project was to increase vocational students' reading time, and show them how this could affect their ability to communicate with the world around them.

What is this about and what were the main findings:

Three English teachers set up a Reading Culture Group for each of their groups of BTEC learners - working towards Entry/Level 1 Functional Skills or GCSE English - to change negative attitudes towards reading, whilst also developing their writing skills. The project activities included: a ‘Read Anything Initiative’, a book swap and the opportunity to enter a writing competition. Learners found having a choice of reading material motivational, and began to take ownership of their own reading, e.g. setting up a book club. Project leads reported that learner vocabulary, terminology, spelling and creative writing skills had improved.
