THE PURPOSE OF THE GUIDANCE
The main aim of this initial Guidance is to provide further information on the Professional Standards so that practitioners can use them in their individual working contexts. Its other purpose is to provide support for the Professional Standards as they are being introduced, to help inform and provide clarity around their uses and purposes.

Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers in Education and Training – England 2014

The 2014 professional standards:
• set out clear expectations of effective practice in Education and Training;
• enable teachers and trainers to identify areas for their own professional development;
• support initial teacher education;
• provide a national reference point that organisations can use to support the development of their staff.
The corresponding Guidance, which was developed with the support of practitioners, aims to help teachers and trainers use the standards and apply them to the context in which they work.

Professional Standards ‘How to’ Guides: Shrewsbury College

Shrewsbury College has produced an assessment tool for use in the recruitment of teachers that reflects and tests potential employees’ commitment to the professional standards; the guide includes an impact study on the use of learning communities to embed the standards, as well as a new teacher appraisal format that encourages reflection on performance against the standards and an approach for planning individual development in the three core areas of the standards.

Professional Standards ‘How to’ Guides: The Manchester College

The focus of Manchester College’s guide captures practitioners’ experiences of embedding the Professional Standards in offender learning settings, through the medium of DigiLit and CPD opportunities. The guide shows how it is possible to create engaging and inclusive lessons through worked examples.
