Current Practice in Using a System of Phonics with Post-16 Learners

The ETF commissioned this research to review the extent to which phonics approaches are currently used with Entry level learners across the sector and to identify how adult literacy tutors might be supported to use phonics approaches effectively. In turn, the research has reviewed the existing evidence base on the efficacy of using phonics approaches with adult learners, and explored the context in which adult literacy teaching at Entry levels takes place.

This review was produced by the CETTAcademy team as part of an Education and Training Foundation project to review the current literature regarding the practices of initial and diagnostic assessment, as well as progress tracking, in the context of maths and English across the Education and Training sector.

Advanced Practitioner Toolkit - Professional Development Cards

This toolkit has been produced to support the work of Advanced Practitioners (APs). It builds on an original set of cards used to develop the skills of teaching and learning coaches who, using a peer to peer coaching model, work with staff to improve specific aspects of their delivery. The cards are practical tools aimed at supporting APs to drive quality improvements in teaching, learning and assessment across provision. They can be used when working one to one with collages as well as with small groups and department teams.

Exploring scholarship and scholarly activity in college-based Higher Education

Research by the Mixed Economy Group commissioned in 2013 by LSIS. The remit was to examine the current arrangements surrounding scholarly activity in those FE colleges which also deliver HE and to draw up a Practice Guide which would be of use to the wide range of colleges currently providing HE in FE.

There are three papers. Part 1, offers a literature review of the subject and leads into the main research output Part 2, the results of a survey of scholarly activity amongst 60 colleges. Part 3 is the Practice Guide which emerges from the survey.
