An OTLA project by Warrington & Vale Royal College that worked on pedagogically ‘rethinking’ the English classroom for post-16 provision in the challenging context of addressing the needs of the GCSE English resit student cohort.
This project aimed to find innovative ways to address the attainment gap amongst GCSE English resit students, especially in respect of vulnerable groups.
To enhance the resit experience for their learners, the project employed a combination of strategies. A research group of Level 3 learners was used to inform understanding of the wider issues around resits, which led teachers to devising more holistic approaches, while three classes of construction and engineering students participated in trialling GCSEPod - a digital English 'revision' resource in preparation for their resits. Early positive signs were that student attendance levels had improved.
