A report describing a project working with learners with severe and complex Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC), emotional, sensory and behavioural difficulties, attempting to develop a competency-based curriculum for Personal Social Development for use with such learners to overcome the tendency to locate such potential students in care rather than education and training.
The project set out to evaluate the effects and impacts of a personalised programme of education and trianing tailored to individual needs and organsied around the concept of a physically enabling , combined living and learning environment. The researcher concluded that a pilot programme had been insufficicantly far reaching and lacked standardisation and used this experience to develop a much broader programe through 3 further iterative development stages. The goal was to ensure that learners with severe, complex and challenging behaviours benefitted from effective personalised teaching, learning and assessment, via a new competency curriculum tailored to their needs and interests
The programme was identified by OFSTED as leading to outstanding outcomes. The reseracher found evidence that the rpogramme was popular and successful in reducing behaviour incidents, increasing positive engagement and in enhancing personal and social development, functional and independent living skills. It also signifcantly extended students' access to the broader community.
