Resource Type:

Description:

This project explored a nationally significant issue in prison education: how to assess the English ability of ESOL learners.

Principal focus of the project:

This project focussed on overcoming a disconnect between ESOL learners’ levels at initial assessment and their performance in class.

What is this about and what were the main findings:

The project ran at HMP Maidstone, a Foreign National Prison (FNP) with ESOL learners who were almost all at Entry Level. Not confident that the BKSB initial assessment was accurate for ESOL students, a new targetted assessment was developed. Digital content, including 'How to' videos, were  made available on a dedicated prison TV channel, and supported by writing assessments and activity packs. The project reported that the trialled assessment had accurately differentiated between pre-Entry ESOL, Entry-level ESOL, and Functional Skills English learners.
