Principal focus of the project:

This project aimed to overcome the barrier that worded questions set in unfamiliar contexts can present to ESOL students in Entry Level Maths assessments.

What is this about and what were the main findings:

To address the gap in understanding, Maths resources specifically aimed at ESOL learners (Entry Level 1-3) were developed, allowing them to apply their mathematical knowledge to problem solving scenarios that were familiar. Working closely with learning support and ESOL tutors, Maths tutors identified some of the most challenging language on which to focus. The project reported that contextualisation had been an effective approach, which had encouraged learners to make better connections and overcome challenges to unfamiliar settings found in Maths questions.
