Resource Type:
etf

Description:

A project exploring enriching vocational learners’ vocabularies by adopting a deliberate, explicit approach.

Taxonomy:
Practitioner Research and Evidence Hub:
Yes
Principal focus of the project:

This project aimed to develop a multi-functional vocabulary that vocational students could both identify with and apply across disciplines.

What is this about and what were the main findings:

Three groups of GCSE English resit students on Motor Vehicle Technology programmes took part in the research. The approach introduced learners to a short, finite list of high value words -  identified by teachers - that they would be exposed to recurrently, and encouraged to use in their own writing. A promotional video, and activities using interactive platforms such as Nearpod and Wordwall, were created amongst other resources to support this. The project reported that learners had been extremely positive, and that the use of words in their writing had improved and boosted their overall confidence in English.
