This project aimed to address the disconnect between the speaking and writing skills of many adult learners, particularly those from an ESOL background.
This project focussed on using the 'critical ear' over the 'critical eye' to help ESOL learners improve their grammatical skills in English.
Based on the principle that many learners express themselves more accurately vocally than on paper, students were encouraged to read their work out aloud to help them correct their mistakes - using their 'grammar ears'. They were then expected to independently re-visit their learning and understanding of the identified grammar rules through homework exercises, using self-marking and online resources. The project reported that learners became more self-evaluative, confident and accurate writers.
