This study explores whether engagement can be increased for vocational students by introducing more socially situated literacies into language activities.
The research focusses on plumbing students' experiences of resitting GCSE English to better understand why disengagement with formal modes of study is so common.
The research used focus groups and semi-structured interviews; encouraged learners to share examples of language that they chose to engage with informally; and incoprorated them to create socially situated literacies in a formal educational setting. The findings suggested that for disenfranchised learners to meaningfully study English, they must reconnect with language on their own terms, through a literacy that is familiar to them.
