A case study exploring the provision of CPD for staff in an ESOL department, and the barriers to engaging with CPD. that those staff experienced
The case study focused on the provision of action research networks, mentoring sessions, co-coaching and peer observation, attempting to overcome barriers to CPD identified in the pre-study research. Data was gathered through surveys and interviews.
The case study found that CPD was generally perceived as a formal endeavour, with value placed on the formal training and courses, as well as formal qualifications for completing them. Less value was attributed to procedural elements such as INSET days. Participants also highlighted training with practical application as being highly valued. Time was frequently cited as the main barrier to participating in CPD.
