Design for Improvement: a service design approach for Further Education providers

Service design is an approach that can be used to improve Further Education (FE) provider services and strategies. This guide describes how FE providers can apply service design processes and tools to improve recruitment, attainment, achievement and progression figures. The tools and process contained here were put into practice by five FE providers that took part in the Design for Improvement programme. Funded by the Learning, Skills and Improvement Service and designed and delivered by Uscreates, Design for Improvement is a learn-by-doing training programme.

Sustaining our Future: a Framework for embedding sustainable development in FE and skills

The Sustaining Our Future Framework aims to:
A. Build common understanding of what sustainable development is about, what it means for the sector and why the sector should collectively respond to it.
B. Alert providers to the business benefits of being a sustainable organisation, and how these benefits can be realised in an increasingly demand-led environment
C. Establish a common set of themes for action.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council: Addressing under-representation of gypsies and travellers in learning and promoting the development and sustainability of new businesses

The aim was to bring together the gypsy/traveller communities and arts/craft people to enhance the development and sustainability of new businesses through a combination of virtual business solutions and community tourist/craft ventures. This involved a wide range of local and one national bodies.

Walsall College - Black Country Partnership Learning Project

This resource comprises the report and resources developed by the Equality and Diversity Partnership Project led by Walsall College in 2009-10. This project aimed to develop an online resource to help Classroom Support Assistants (CSAs) to broaden their awareness of E&D to enable them to increase personalisation of support and provide more effective support for all learners and increase their own job satisfaction. The resources included are the final report and a guide to using the E&D Moodle.

Stepping Up in Sustainability: Walsall College

Through this project - entitled 'Sustainability and Responsible Stewardship: Bringing it all Together' - the college aimed to: raise awareness and understanding in a number of diverse groups in relation to their personal contribution to the sustainability agenda; enter dialogue with the New Engineering Foundation who would provide data evidencing need, advice and guidance along with on-project support; and encourage individuals to make a big difference. Using the title of ‘Pass it On’- it was intended that a sharing and raising of awareness would take place across a wider audience.
