The aim of the project was to gain an insight into how Functional Skills Maths learners perceive questions, in order to overcome the real barriers to achievement.
This project focussed on overcoming the language barriers in Functional Skills Maths, to enable raising achievement.
Having identified from learners that language was a barrier to decoding Maths questions, the project lead and learners explored a variety of approaches to making them more accessible, e.g. highlighting, annotating, drawing images, storyboarding etc. These were trialled both in face-to-face and online situations, and included group and one-to-one sessions. The project reported an increase in confidence and achievement rates among the learners who adopted the strategies.
