This project focussed on overcoming the language barriers in Functional Skills Maths, to enable raising achievement.

What is this about and what were the main findings: 

Having identified from learners that language was a barrier to decoding Maths questions, the project lead and learners explored a variety of approaches to making them more accessible, e.g. highlighting, annotating, drawing images, storyboarding etc. These were trialled both in face-to-face and online situations, and included group and one-to-one sessions. The project reported an increase in confidence and achievement rates among the learners who adopted the strategies.
