Principal focus of the project:

This project aimed to enhance vocational learners’ literacy skills and confidence through exploring phonics- based approaches.

What is this about and what were the main findings:

English and vocational teachers from Early Years, Hair and Beauty, Sports Studies collaborated with the English Progress Coach for this project. An external expert introduced the vocational staff to phonics-based approaches, whilst they were also buddied up with English teachers who provided ongoing support. The project felt that the approaches had led to improved learner performance, and vocational staff had extended their own skills and confidence in embedding literacy practices.
