Principal focus of the project:

This project built on their OTLA 6 research, aiming to use audio as a key tool to embed phonics into the delivery of spelling and grammar workshops for ESOL and Functional Skills English learners.

What is this about and what were the main findings:

The project identified using The Drop-in Series by Frances Woodward - a set of decodable readers for adults - as the basis for the majority of the phonics teaching. These were made into audio using PowerPoint, and learners were asked to listen and read along with the text in their own time. This acted as a springboard for a range of approaches. The project found that strategic phonics approaches could have a very positive impact on learners’ spelling, reading fluency and language acquisition.
