A case study exploring a project, and its extension, about using assessment practice and employer engagement differently in the delivery of engineering and construction programmes.
The project focused on the provision of workshops to allow staff to explore problem-based learning (PBL) and skills required for the development and facilitiation of problem-based learning, aligning with the Professional Standards. The workshops were designed to promote teachers to think about, and experience, the effects of conducting problem-based learning with students.
The researchers identified some factors which may support the successful implementation of Problem Based Learning. These included: making sure problems represent real-world experiences and weave together theory and practice; dedicated CPD for practitioners to help them successfully facilitate PBL; and focusing on team building, and supporting students' collaborative and independent study skills, as a precondition of commencing PBL.
