A case study of a project that looked into the causes of low engagement and achievement in English and Maths with NEETs and disaffected learners in Greater London, and aimed to improve staff confidence and student pass rates in functional skills.
The focus was on understanding initial perceptions of both teachers and learners of literacy learning and how these may affect learning, and aimed to set up a support network for remote courses and develop staff confidence in delivering functional skills at the partner organisation to the college through shared resources.
An understanding of how subject specific resources can be used to support English was developed, and staff confidence in delivering embedded English was improved. A wider understanding of the implications of underdeveloped English skills explicitly in teaching was also reported. Increased project visibility for all stakeholders from the inception was found to be essential.
