The aim of this case study, suported by parternshps with Connexions, the Peer Review and Development group and the Parent and Pupil Partnerhsip Unit, was to reverse the downward trend in learner numbers from the Pakistani community through understanding and responding to their needs.
The key focus was on reversing the decline in the numbers enrolling, reversing the downward trend in retention, narrowing achievement gaps in certain areas at Level 1 and 2 long courses and increasing the distribution of students across the whole curriculum offer on the basis of better understandingof their needs and starting points.
The College gained a better understanding of the culture and values of the visible minority community and an understanding that a one size fits all approach is wholly inappropriate. The issues within the community were in themselves quite complex and diverse and required the college to address them in a way that supported opportunity, family security, community cohesion and inclusiveness. The senior leadership team have made a commitment to the action plan prepared in the light of this evidence including working with an ambassador to build better two way communication and providing support to teachers to enable them to develop better informed approaches to working with this community.
