Principal focus of the project:

The project focused on the views of learners and staff within the Centre of Study of Childcare, which had highlighted the importance of English and maths progression to the requirements of the course, although the research itself focused solely on English.

What is this about and what were the main findings:

The research explored the experiences and perceptions of staff and learners through questionnaires and focus groups. Colleagues supported the policy to raise maths and English skills of the Early Years workforce. It became clear that learners were aware of their need to improve their English and maths, and that individual tutorials were of value, but found some writing and spelling a challenge. Staff also highlighted their learners' struggles with structuring assignments, vocabulary and spelling and identified the need for a common 'handbook' to replace thee xisting multi-resource approach with something more coherent.. The report also details steps taken by the college to respond to the requirements highlighted by the research.
