A case study exploring a project that was a collaboration between three colleges to support teachers to deliver consistently 'good' to 'outstanding' teaching in GCSE mathematics, identified as an area where it has been hard to recruit suitably qualified teachers.
The project focused on creating and delivering a model with resource packs for GCSE maths delivery, and ensuring the packs helped to identify skills gaps. The project also initially aimed to establish whether the relational and personality traits of teachers were as important, or more important, than their ability and knowledge of GCSE mathematics.
Observations revealed that while experienced teachers were able to deliver ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ lessons, novice or non-specialist teachers were also able to deliver lessons that were at least ‘good’ with the full support of their colleagues. These improvements resulted in increased teacher confidence, which in turn promoted better class management and student behaviour.
