Description:

This is a padlet with an action research report titled 'Do you know who I am? Celebrating the identities of ESOL learners in an FE College'.

Taxonomy:
Practitioner Research and Evidence Hub:
Yes
Principal focus of the project:

The aim was to celebrate the cultures of ESOL learners and to open up the possibility of communicating them across the wider college. Participants took part in an intitial workshop looking at how situations might affect their confidence with language, and then hosted a community event built around them as active developers, and enabling them to ensure it was authentic and enjoyable.

What is this about and what were the main findings:

All participants - especially ESOL students - enjoyed the celebration event and wanted to repeat it. Involving members of the wider community and the wider college staff was an effective way of increasing community/college cohesion. Learners form non-ESOL courses contributed to the event, and in doing so expanded their understanding of ESOL cultures. The library also stocked more resources celebrating the cultures. Members of the local community who attended have since contacted the college about enrolling on courses and using college resources.
