A case study exploring a project aiming to use oracy-based approaches to improve prisoner writing skills.
The project focused on whether adapting the ‘Talk for Writing’ method used in schools would work in the prison education setting to deliver better outcomes for learners. It did so by working with a Talk For Writing consultant, introducing project staff to the methood, holding training sessions for the prisons and regional teams, and adapting the approach to each of the individual prison settings and experimenting with materials.
The project found that success rates in achieving the various English qualifications across all 9 institutions improved by between 5% and 55% after the implementation of the 'Talk for Writing' approach. Progress tracking for individual learners also revealed some profound improvements
