Principal focus of the project:

The project team wanted to address what was needed to enable all those delivering HE to work as effective Grade 1 teachers. Colleagues investigated the needs of staff through interviews, and developed short, medium and longer term strategies for responding to emerging needs which they explored through developing communities of practice. The study included identifying how the methods employed by a Grade 1 tutor delivering HE in college differed, which of them were considered most effective, and any further help that teachers might need to develop professionally.

What is this about and what were the main findings:

Participants would liked to have had someone to direct them, been able to spend time observing how colleagues did things, and received clearer explanations as to how the system could be used more effectively with students. Participants also liked 'the amount of time we spend with the students, and the way the students are happy to come and find you to ask questions'; and noted that 'there doesn't seem to be a lot of uniformity in the way people teach things'.
