On the back of The Isle of Wight being identified by the Office of National Statistics as an employment blackspot, this pilot used the It's My Community toolkit to bring learners and the business community together to investigate ways to stimulate employment and job creation. The toolkit helped learners frame the questions asked during the project, and broadened the learners thinking about community and its relationship with local business. The learner led toolkit provided an effective way for learners to take full ownership and control of the project, and developed skills that are not able to be taught in a classroom, but learnt through practical application. The main findings from the research are: learners want to learn about the world of work; learners want more careers guidance; employers want employability skills; and employers want IT skills.
