Description:

City College Plymouth aimed to engage new learners from disaffected and deprived backgrounds to become college students. It worked with community based iorganisations, such as the Shekinah mission (an organisation supporting homeless people) delivering learning at their premises, and then identified progression opportunities to join a mainstream college course. The use of mobile technologies, internet social sites, information advice and guidance plus, the development of a mobile virtual classroom encouraged learners that may be prone to not completing a course, to use other methods to stay in touch and develop stronger links with peers and tutors for a more favourable outcome by making learning fun and interesting. The project has engaged learners from with multiple disadvantages. Historically, learners from similar backgrounds tended to have a high drop out rate with an average of 36% success. However, the introduction of social networking to improve peer encouragement has developed a peer bond and support between fellow class mates, encouraging regular attendance, improving retention and overall success for these students to 74%.
